Victoria Adelaide: You went from electronica music with Faithless, to an organic bluesy, jazzy, funky band ‘Maxi Jazz & the E-Type Boys’, made up of friends. What happened in your life that made you take such a drastic musical turn?
Maxi Jazz: After more than 20 years of Faithless music, I went in search of my own. And, having been an emcee for thirty years (!), writing and singing songs while playing the guitar represented a challenge that was not insignificant! And it’s incredibly exciting.
VA: In 2015, you celebrated 20 years of Faithless with a fan base that remained strong throughout all of those years. How have your fans reacted to your brand new style?
MJ: Well, it’s a slow process getting the music out there, but I’ve had nothing but positive responses thus far. It’s very encouraging.
VA: Do you think you have met their expectations?
MJ: I’m afraid it’s MY expectations that must be met. I then have to hope people like it! It’s out of my hands…
VA: What has the feedbac Maxi Jazz (born Maxwell Fraser in Brixton, London, on 15 June 1957; died 23 December 2022) was an English Sōka Gakkai musician, rapper, singer-songwriter and DJ. He is best remembered as the lead vocalist of British band Faithless from 1995 to 2011 and again during 2015. Fraser founded The Soul Food Cafe System as a DJ in 1984, having discovered hip-hop a year earlier. He transferred this sound to pirate radio station LWR in 1987. In 1989 The Soul Food Cafe Band was picked up by Tam Tam Records, the dance wing of Savage Records), and the album Soul Food Café was recorded. Fraser founded Namu Records in 1992 in order to release the band's material in the form of three E.P's and the band toured as a support act to various artists, including Jamiroquai in Amsterdam; Soul II Soul in Barcelona; Galliano in Switzerland; and Jason Rebello in Brazil. After the band dissolved, Fraser worked throughout Europe, and took time out to collaborate with Jah Wobble on the "Invaders Of The Heart" album, followed by live dates with the Wobble Collective. Maxwell Fraser (born 14 June 1957 in Brixton, London), better known by his stage name Maxi Jazz, is an English musician, rapper, singer-songwriter and DJ. He is best known as the lead vocalist of British band Faithless.
Jazz founded The Soul Food Cafe System as a DJ in 1984, having discovered hip hop a year earlier. He first aired the sound as a DJ calling it "In the Soul Kitchen with DJ Maxi Jazz" on pirate radio station Reach FM London in 1985/6. He transferred this sound to pirate radio station LWR in 1987.
In 1989, The Soul Food Cafe Band was picked up by Tam Tam Records, which is the dance wing of Savage Records.
