Martin Michaeli (founder and owner): "From the very beginning, my goal was to make the best shoe brand in the world and that passion has led me ever since."
Founded in 1965 in France, Mephisto soon became the most popular walking shoe in every new market. While other walking shoes are often made of synthetics and are rarely touched by the human hand in the manufacturing process, these French footwear have retained the features of a natural product (soft leather, latex, cork and rubber), and each shoe still, despite a large number of customers, individually handcrafted in the spirit of an unsurpassed European tradition.
As early as 1975, Mephisto became a world-famous brand. "ORIGINALS" shoes paved the way for worldwide success thanks to uncompromising comfort and the revolutionary idea of "casual" footwear for outdoor activities, and at the same time for the city. About
Martin Michaelis received his Pharmacy Degree (Approbation, 1998) and his PhD (2001) from the Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He then worked as postdoc and later deputy group leader in the research group of Professor Jindrich Cinatl at the Institute of Medical Virology (Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) and the Dr Petra Joh-Forschungshaus, a private research institute run by the Frankfurter Stiftung für krebskranke Kinder in Frankfurt am Main. In 2011, Martin joined the University of Kent. He runs a joint wet/dry laboratory research group together with Dr Mark Wass.
Martin’s recent work has focused on Covid-19, and he has provided expert media commentary on vaccines and other treatments, variants and restrictions. His expertise on Covid-19 has seen him feature in a range of news outlets including The Daily Express, The Daily Mail, BBC Radio Kent, Daily Mirror and The Sunday Telegraph.

The Story Of Mephisto
Over 50 years ago, Martin Michaeli discovered his life’s calling, to create the most comfortable footwear in the world.
Michaeli graduated as a shoe engineer from Germany and travelled to the US where he worked as a footwear designer and later, a factory manager. Whilst living in the US, Michaeli longed for more, and upon returning to Europe in 1965, founded the original Mephisto headquarters in France.
