Biography

Yony Leyser was born in DeKalb, USA, in 1985. The son of an Israeli-Iranian mother and an American father grew up in Chicago, where he also began to study acting at the Academy for the Arts. In 2004, he enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. His provocative art projects soon brought him into conflict with the school administration, and he left to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He eventually graduated from The New School University in New York City, majoring in film and journalism.

Leyser started his first film project in Lawrence, which had been the home of author William S. Burroughs until his death in 1997. For several years, Leyser travelled across the USA to interview prominent contemporaries and collaborators of Burroughs, including Patti Smith, John Waters, David Cronenberg and Iggy Pop. The resulting documentary "William S. Burroughs: A Man Within" (US 2010) premiered at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival and subsequently screened at festivals around the world.

Yony Leyser is a Berlin, Germany based writer and director whose work has spanned two decades focusing on artists, the LGBTQ+ community, subcultures and queer history. Collectively Leyser’s work has been screened in over 150 institutions and festivals around the world, including Slamdance, Seattle International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/fest, Viennale, Guadalajara International Film Festival, IDFA, Filmfest Max Ophüls Preis, Frameline and HotDocs; as well as streaming and on TV on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Arte, ZDF, RTL+, SVT, PBS, Vice/Viceland, VPRO, SBS, Pluto TV, Night Flight, YouTube and Tubi.

Leyser’s award-winning feature films include William S. Burroughs: A Man Within (2010), Desire Will Set You Free (2015) and Queercore: How To Punk A Revolution (2017). In 2019, the Maxim Gorki Theatre premiered Leyser’s first theater piece W(A)RM HOLES. In 2020 Leyser co-authored the book Queercore: How To Punk A Revolution out on PM Press. Early life and education

Yony Leyser was born in DeKalb, Illinois in 1985 to an Israeli-Iranian mother and a German Jewish father.[1]

Leyser studied at the California Institute of the Arts and at the University of Kansas[2] before graduating with a B.A from The New School in New York City, where he majored in film and journalism, and an MFA from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.[2]

In 2010, Leyser relocated to Berlin.

Career

After five years in the making, Leyser independently released his first feature film, William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, adocumentary film covering William S. Burroughs in 2010. The film features archival footage, some of which was previously unreleased, as well as interviews with Burrough's friends and colleagues.
