For almost three decades, U.S. Latino fiction was a realm of magic realism, stuck somewhere among clichéd visions of grandmas, mangoes and the sea. Then in 2003 Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez put pen to paper and produced a hip, fast-paced novel about six young Latinas trying to get ahead at the office and in the bedroom. Call it chica lit. The six women of The Dirty Girls Social Club are smart, funny and, most important, professionals. They include a reporter, a rock star and a news anchor none of whom ever gets absorbed in ponderous debates about the immigrant experience.
"I didn't want this to be 'Oh, here we are with our mantilla, praying to the Virgin of Guadalupe,'" says Valdes-Rodriguez, who is of Cuban-Irish descent. "That's not my reality." Born 36 years ago into a middle-class family in Albuquerque, N.M., she lives there now with her husband and young son. She has a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and has worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and the Boston Globe.

Early life
Valdes was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico.[1] Her father, Nelson Valdés, is a retired sociology professor at the University of New Mexico, and emigrated from Cuba in the early 1960s.[2] Her mother, Maxine Conant, is a seventh-generation New Mexican of mixed heritage, including Spanish, Mexican, Portuguese Jewish, Puebloan, and Irish ancestry,[3] and is a descendant of Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts, and Vermont revolutionary Ethan A

Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez is an American author of more than a dozen novels, with more than a million books in print. Her debut novel with St. Martin's Press, The Dirty Girls Social Club, landed on the New York Times bestseller list its first day out and is currently in development for a TV show with Universal Television Studios. In her early career, Alisa wrote mostly commercial women's fiction. In recent years, she's veered towards thrillers, with the launch of the Jodi Luna suspense series with Thomas & Mercer Books. The first book in that series, Hollow Beasts, was named one of the 10 best mystery novels of 2023 by The Washington Post. The Jodi Luna books are in development for TV series at 20th Century Television with Gina Torres to star.
