Mitchell Modell has been working for the family business since he was 8 years old. Founded in 1889, Modell’s is America’s oldest family-owned sporting goods store, guided by four generations of Modells and surviving countless challenges and changes as the market evolves. When I was 8, I’d follow my father and take notes for his meetings; then from ages 12 to 16, I worked in the warehouse and the stores in the summers. American businessman (1921–2008)

William D. Modell (May 13, 1921 – February 14, 2008) was an American businessman who chaired the Modell's Sporting Goodsretail chain.^[1]

Early life

Modell was born on May 13, 1921^[1] to a Jewish family.^[2] He grew up in the Manhattan Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, before attending New York University.^[1] He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II.^[1]

Modell's Sporting Goods

William Modell first became involved in Modell's Sporting Goods, a family business, after World War II.^[1] The store had been founded in 1889 by Modell's Hungarian immigrant grandfather, Morris Modell, who opened the first store on Cortlandt Street in Lower Manhattan.^[1] Modell's Sporting Goods grew rapidly after World War I by stocking up on leftover army surplus and selling it at low prices.^[1]

Bio

Dr. Mitchell L Model is a computer scientist with a background in philosophy. He specializes in object technology, knowledge representation, user interfaces, distributed computing, and software development and is an inveterate software tool builder. Mitchell held academic appointments at Brown and Brandeis Universities and worked at a number of early-phase startup companies. For much of his career he has been an independent consultant, providing training, mentoring, and support to software development groups learning to use new technologies and practices. He has written and taught many professional programming and technology courses. Mitchell is also the author of one of the first C++-based data structure books -- Data Structures, Data Abstraction: A Contemporary Introduction Using C++, published in 1994 by Prentice-Hall.
