Born in 1924 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Vasudeo S. Gaitonde received a diploma in painting from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. He was a member of the Progressive Artists’ Group. Gaitonde is one of India's most profound and evocative artists, and played a vital role in establishing the foundations of abstraction in India. Influenced by Zen philosophy and ancient calligraphy, his works have an inherent structure and control on the midst of their stream of consciousness composition. The reclusive master experimented with form and shape in his works evoking subliminal depths in his works, transforming basic elements into platforms for spiritual introspection.
In his lifetime Gaitonde participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad, and continues to routinely set new records at auctions. A major retrospective of his work was held by the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 2014–15. His work is also part of several important collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

V. S. Gaitonde
One of India’s most revered artists, Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde preferred the term ‘non-objective’ painter over ‘abstraction.’ He was born in Nagpur in 1924.
He received his diploma in painting from Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, in 1948. Impressed by his work, the members of the Progressive Artists’ Group—formed in 1947—pulled him into their meetings. The strength of his talent was soon recognised elsewhere—he won the first prize of the Young Asian Artists Association in Tokyo in 1957, and a John D. Rockefeller III Fund fellowship in 1964.
The textural structure with the interplay of colour is the central conductive device in Gaitonde’s paintings. His compositions, inspired by Zen philosophy, possess a kinetic power that imparts movement to his delicately balanced configurations. For Gaitonde, art began in an intensity that moved steadily towards refining itself, even as it explored the artist’s inward spaces and momentary realities. Gaitonde used a roller and a palette knife to influence and mix different mediums on canvas.

The making of VS Gaitonde: A new biography sheds light on the reclusive artist
A biography on the legendary artist VS Gaitonde (known to friends as Gai), offers a glimpse of his formative years
When I don’t paint, I am not a painter. I am just an ordinary human being.” This quote by late modern artist VS Gaitonde features on the flap of his new biography, titled Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde — Sonata of Solitude. It sums up the ethos of the artist whose works continue to fetch astronomical prices: in December 15, 2015, an untitled oil painting by him fetched Rs 29.3 crore at Christie’s India auction, setting a record for the highest selling Indian work in modern and contemporary art.
Yet, despite the significance of his oeuvre, there is little documentation about the late artist who studied at the Sir JJ School of Art, was a member of the Progressives Artists’ Group, and was bestowed the Padma Shri in 1971.
A personal connect
Art lovers can take heart though. The biography, which released last week, highlights stories from his childhood to his formative years and his st
