Biography
Fast-paced, wry and often acidic, the work of Kip Fulbeck explores the contemporary Asian American and Hapa (multiracial Asian) experience through personal narrative. Fulbeck taps into the ambiguities of his identity while challenging the boundaries of "identity" as a category. An inveterate storyteller, his clever, nuanced tales are presented with an irony that is grounded in his own blurred cultural footing and fascination for pop culture.
Kip Fulbeck was born in 1965 in Fontana, California. He received a B.A. and an M.F.A. in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego, studying under Eleanor Antin. His videos and performance work have exhibited throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Singapore International Film Festival; the Transmediale Media Arts Festival, Berlin; the World Wide Video Festival, The Hague; and the 1993 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial. Lawrence Keith "Kip" Fulbeck is an American artist, spoken word performer, filmmaker and author. Fulbeck's work explores identity politics.[2][3][4][5]
His mixed race ethnic background is English, Welsh, Irish and Cantonese.[2] He is best known for his work addressing Hapa and multiracial identity and as the creator of The Hapa Project.[6]
Fulbeck attended UCLA, Dartmouth College and the University of California, San Diego, where he was a four-year NCAAAll-American Swimmer[7] and 1988 Athlete of the Year.[8] He earned his MFA from UCSD in 1992.[9]

Fulbeck's artwork includes video, spoken word, photography and slam poetry. He is the author of Permanence: Tattoo Portraits; Part Asian, 100% Hapa; Paper Bullets: A Fictional Autobiography; and the upcoming Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids, as well as the director of a dozen short films including Banana Split and Lilo & Me. Kip has been featured on CNN, MTV, and PBS, and has performed and exhibited in over 20 countries. He speaks nationwide on identity, multiraciality and pop culture — mixing together spoken word, stand-up comedy, political activism and personal stories. A challenging and inspirational teacher, Kip is a professor of Art at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he is the recipient of the university's Distinguished Teaching Award. He is also an avid surfer, guitar player, motorcycle rider, ocean lifeguard, and pug enthusiast. A complete overachiever despite being only half Chinese, he is also a world-ranked Masters swimmer.
