Is narcissism on the rise?

Are we dealing with an epidemic of narcissism, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or just a moral panic about narcissism?

Jean Twenge, Professor of Psychology at San Diego University, has argued strongly that narcissism is on the rise. She has even written a book about it: “The Narcissism Epidemic.”

Her research seems to show that American college students have become more narcissistic.

There’s a questionnaire that’s been used since the 1980s, called the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. Comparing samples of college students who completed the survey between 1982 and 2009 and those completing it today, it seems there’s been an increase in students using narcissistic terms to describe themselves. “There was a very big increase in the percentage of college students who said they were above average in their drive to achieve,” says Twenge, “There was also a big increase in those who believed they were above average in their leadership ability, also their intellectual confidence and social self-confide

Jolyon Jenkins is a British investigative journalist and radio documentary producer known for his work with BBC Radio 4. Over a career spanning several decades, he has produced and presented numerous award-winning documentaries covering a diverse range of topics, from politics and technology to social issues and the environment.

Career

Jenkins has been a long-standing contributor to BBC Radio 4, producing and presenting investigative programmes for strands such as File on 4[1] and Out of the Ordinary.[2] His work is characterized by deep investigative research and an ability to tackle unconventional subjects with clarity and insight. The Glasgow Herald described him as "the go-to guy for quirky subjects which require intelligence and chutzpah in equal measure",[3] while the Radio Times has noted that "Jenkins makes some of the most original documentaries on Radio 4"[4] and in the same publication, David Gillard noted "Whatever subject Jolyon Jenkins is dealing with I will listen ... I regard him one of our finest broadcast

I respond to the latter, more complete, record of the discussion between the two men. In particular I address some topics on which Mr Jenkins seemed to think he had scored points: partner abuse, hypergamy and sex-selective abortion or infanticide.

Partner Abuse

The exchange followed a common deflectionary tactic in which details of the survey statistics submerged the actual issue: absence of support for male victims.

Depending on exactly which data you wish to cite, the proportion of male victims of partner abuse might be 1-in-3 or 2-in-5 or 1-in-2. By 2012/13, the CSEW data for the incidence in the preceding year of the most severe category of physical violence had converged to virtual equality between the sexes (about 1% of respondants for both sexes). Curiously this category ceased to be reported in the CSEW the following year. Odd that.
