MODARES TABRIZI says, his full name was Mahmoud ben POURIA VALI. When he was young, he embroidered coat and hat. At the same, he was going to other cities and countries like India for the sake of wrestling. He was so famous in many cities and countries.
Once king of India invited him to do wrestling with Indian hero. POURIA accepted the invitation and went there. But before entering the ground of wrestling, he saw the opponent`s mother is crying and requesting God for his son`s victory. POURIA VALI showed an exciting combat but at the end surprisingly allowed to Hindi hero to win. By this way Indian mother became so happy and thanked God.
POURIA VALI was mastered the techniques of wrestling and physical abilities.
In Iran, when wrestlers are performing difficult tasks such as rock lifting, remember his name and get his name on their tongue. At the beginning of each exercise, read poem attributed to him.

Pahlavan Mahmoud Khwarazmi more commonly known as Pourya-ye Vali (died 1322 CE) was an Iranian Sufi and champion. He is famous for his chivalrous behavior and his strength and is still a paradigm for Zurkhaneh athletes.

The nickname of Qtaly known as Pahlavan Mahmoud al-Khwarizmi, has been attributed to Pourya-ye Vali in Iran. His tomb is discussed in two towns, one in Khiva, Uzbekistan and the other one in Khoy, Iran.

He also wrote a book titled Kanz ol-Haghayegh (literally The treasure of the truths) in Persian. A couplet from him which is being sung in Zurkhaneh is as below (in Fingilish):

Oftadegi amouz agar taleb-e feizi,

Hargez nakhorad aab zamini ke boland ast

Learn modesty, if you desire knowledge,

Pahlavān Mahmoud, known in Iran as Pouryā-ye Vali (died 1322 CE), was a pahlevani wrestling champion, Sufi teacher and poet from the 14th century Persia, famous for his exceptional strength. He became the patron saint of the city of Khiva, in Uzbekistan.

Biography

Pahlawan Mahmud lived during the years of Mongol rule over Central Asia. He achieved great fame at the time both as a professional wrestler and as a poet-philosopher. Above all, he is said to have been a high-ranking Sufi teacher.

A special feature of Pahlavan Mahmoud's school (Zurkhaneh) was the education of the students' minds through the martial art of wrestling, a discipline with which he made a name for himself as far away as Central Asia and India. In Persian as well as in Old Uzbek (Chagatay) and Hindi, the word Pahlavan /پهلوان (other spelling Palvan/پلوان) became a synonym for a wrestler, hero, or champion.[1] After his death he was venerated as a saint in Persia and Central Asia.
