enis Jasarevic, otherwise known as Gramatik, resides in the region of space-time where hip hop meets electronic soul-funk. I had the chance to probe the mind of this Slovenian producer as he was beginning his Epigram Tour in 2015 but he has been pioneering the electronic hip hop revolution ever since. This musical mastermind has a long history with music which began with his older sister's audio cassettes.
My sister is couple of years older than me and she was taping her music on audio cassettes. I would sneak in her room and listen to her cassettes. She introduced me to the music and my parents brought me my first synthesizer from their trip to Singapore. Slovenia-born DJ and producer Gramatik creates a highly original blend of hip-hop, soul, funk and electronica. • The artist born Denis Jašarević gravitated towards funk, jazz, soul and blues as a youngster. He later found hip-hop and made his first beats on a home computer at age 13. • After building an international following with his music, he moved to the US and released the 2008 albums Expedition 44 and SB1. • In 2009, Gramatik signed with Pretty Lights Music, the label run by producer Derek Smith, aka Pretty Lights. In 2013, Gramatik founded his own label, Lowtemp music. • Gramatik made the Top 20 of Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart with 2014’s The Age of Reason. He returned to the chart—narrowly missing the Top 20—with 2016’s Epigram. • Gramatik has worked on several film soundtracks with fellow Slovenian producer Luxas. In 2020, the pair teamed up for Cyberpunk 2020, a soundtrack to an imagined film that was inspired by the struggles of 2020.

Here’s our well-calculated portrait.
The end of a TV show is always traumatic. Breaking Bad? Tough. Dexter? Surprising. Lost? A shock. But at the end of the day, it’s the screenwriters who mess everything up. “How can such a great show just end like that?” This is the philosophical rant that Gramatik has just started at 2 o’clock in the morning, backstage at the musical festival Papillons de Nuit, somewhere in Normandy.
Usually, you get one or two hours to defend your opinion. Gramatik only gets a few minutes. Nina, his partner, holds up two fingers to show how little time there is left before the show. “It’s time to go,” she says calmly. The Slovenian artist makes his way front-stage where 25 000 people are waiting for him, eage
