I discovered this book, or rather its author, through Sharon Salzberg's Metta Hour podcast. He made fascinating points during the interview and I was pleasantly surprised when the library had his book and borrowed it as quickly as I could.

Richard Charles Hansen, Sr., alternately known as Richard, Dick, and R.C., passed away peacefully of heart failure, surrounded by loving family, at the home he shared with his daughter and son-in-law in Eugene, Oregon, on April 9, 2021. Richard, 98, was born in Oceanside, California, on February 14, 1923, to parents Edward and Pauline (Parrott) Hansen. His mother died shortly after Richard’s birth. At six weeks old he traveled with a nurse by train to Emerson, Nebraska, to be raised and adopted by his uncle and aunt, Dr. Nelson L. and Henrietta J. (Henry) Hansen. After graduation from Emerson High School in 1941, Dick attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, where he met the love of his life, Ruth Ellen Ritzen. After working as a band director during college and as a timekeeper on the railroad, Dick became a petty officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Dr. Rick Hanson

Richard "Rick" Hanson, M.D., is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has been practicing pediatric and adult medicine in hospitals, surgery centers, and pediatric dental offices in Oregon for almost two decades. He received an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Montana State University and worked as an engineer for 5 years before switching to medicine. He received his MD from the University of Washington and completed his anesthesiology residency at Oregon Health and Sciences University. During residency, he focused additional time in pediatrics. He has exclusively practiced pediatric anesthesia since January 2022. Dr. Hanson has a beautiful wife, Wendy, and two children, Morgan and Harmon. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, working out, mountain biking, fly fishing and working on his classic Bronco.
