Defender Rupinder Pal Singh was one of the stars of India's bronze-medal winning campaign at the Tokyo Olympics this year. The dragflicker scored four goals at the Games, including a penalty stroke in the third-place match against Germany. But just a couple of months after the Olympics, the 30-year-old announced that he is retiring from the sport.
According to sources cited by news agency PTI, Rupinder, along with Birender Lakra, was informed that they will not be a part of India's future plans - and will not be included among the players called up for the national camp in Bengaluru, which prompted them to make the decision.
In an exclusive interaction with Hindustan Times, Rupinder delved deeper into his decision to retire, and also revealed his future plans.

Rupinder to lead youthful squad
India, Japan, Pakistan and hosts Indonesia are in Pool ‘A’ while Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh are in Pool ‘B’ in the event, which is a World Cup qualifier. India have already qualified for the World Cup as hosts.The tournament will mark the return of senior players like Rupinder, Lakra and striker SV Sunil. The two defenders have come out of retirement following the bronze medal feat at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
Besides the seniors, India have named 10 new faces in the 20-member line-up.
This includes junior World Cup players — Yashdeep Siwach, Abhisek Lakra, Manjeet, Vishnukant Singh and Uttam Singh. Also set for their senior team debut are Mareeswaren Sakthivel, Sheshe Gowda BM, Pawan Rajbhar, Abharan Sudev and S Karthi.

Rupinder Pal Singh (born 11 November 1990) is an Indian former field hockey player, who represented the India national field hockey team. He plays as a fullback and is known for his abilities as one of the best drag flickers in the world.[1] He represented India in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, 2014 Asian Games at Incheon, 2016 Olympic Games held at Rio de Janeiro, and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held at Gold Coast, Australia. He was part of the Indian hockey team that won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and announced his retirement from international Hockey after 2020 Olympics.
Early life
Rupinder Pal Singh was born in a Sikh family in Faridkot, Punjab, India. The six-foot four inch-footer, is the youngest of the family, who took up hockey at the age of eleven. He is related to international hockey player, Gagan Ajit Singh. His interest in hockey got a boost when got selected for the Chandigarh Hockey Academy.
