Milton finds Paradise in the skies

Jeff Roberts | You have to be either a visionary or a masochist. Or so it seemed listening to Air Canada CEO Robert Milton and a group of airline aficionados gathered in the Bronfman Building last week to chat about what could be the most volatile sector in business.

Milton was on hand as part of the CEO Speaker Series organized by Professor Karl Moore and the McGill MBA Students Association. The lunchtime event allowed students and alumni to meet the man behind the media hype and to learn first-hand about what it takes - professionally and personally - to make it in the airline industry.

Youthful and charismatic, Milton seemed surprisingly serene for a man who has been at the centre of some of corporate Canada's most savage dust-ups. He was relaxed and thoughtful as he described how he became the head of Air Canada at 39, only to be confronted two weeks later by a hostile takeover bid from Onex Corporation.

Marc ParentCM (born February 5, 1961) is a French-Canadian business executive, mechanical engineer, and philanthropist. He has been the president and chief executive officer of CAE[4] since 2009.

Early life and education

Marc Parent was born in Verdun, Quebec.[5] At the age of 12, he joined the 51st Air Cadet squadron in Ottawa. He later switched to the 783rd Air Cadet squadron in Montreal. Parent obtained his pilot's license through the Air Cadets at the age of 17.[6] He remained in the Air Cadets for a total of 6 years.[7][8]

Parent graduated from the Polytechnique Montréal in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.[9] In 2012, Parent received an honorary doctorate from the same institution.[10]

Parent is a graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.[4]

Parent is an active pilot, holding an Airline Transport Pilot License from Transport Canada.

Robert E. Brown is President and Chief Executive Officer of CAE Inc. (a provider of simulation and modelling technologies as well as an integrated training services for both civil aviation and defence customers). Mr. Brown is a director of CAE Inc. and the Chairman of Aeroplan Holding GP Inc. He was also the Chairman of Air Canada from 2003 to 2004. Mr. Brown joined Bombardier Inc. in 1987 and was responsible for the Bombardier Aerospace sector from 1990 to 1999. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Bombardier Inc. (aerospace and transportation) from 1999 to 2002. Mr. Brown also held various senior positions in federal ministries with economic vocations, including the position of Associate Deputy Minister in the Department of Regional Industrial Expansion before joining the private sector.
