Elizabeth O’Farrell (1884-1957) acted as a dispatcher before and during the Rising, delivering bulletins and instructions to the rebel outposts around Dublin. Along with her lifelong friend and fellow nurse, Julia Grenan, she cared for the wounded including James Connolly. At 12.45pm on Saturday 29th April O’Farrell was asked to deliver the surrender to the British military.
O’Farrell was taken to Brigadier General W. H. M. Lowe who sent her back to Pearse at number 16 Moore Street with a demand for unconditional surrender. Pearse agreed and, accompanied by O’Farrell, surrendered in person to General Lowe.
Despite Lowe’s assurance that she would not be taken prisoner, O’Farrell, was held overnight at Ship Street Barracks after the surrender. When he learned of her arrest, Lowe had her released and apologised to her.
She died in Fatima House in Bray, Co. Wicklow on 25 June 1957. She remained active in Republican politics until her death and she is buried in the Republican Plot in Glasnevin Cemetery alongside Julia Gren

[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Elizabeth O’Farrell wurde als eine von zwei Töchtern von Christopher O’Farrell, der in einer Druckerei und Dockarbeiter arbeitete, und Margaret Kenneah, einer Haushälterin, geboren.[3] Ihr Vater starb, als sie noch jung war, und sie wurde zum Arbeiten geschickt. Sie nahm eine Stelle in der Druckerei des Vaters an und die Mutter eröffnete einen kleinen Laden am City Quay in Dublin. Sie ging bei den Sisters of Mercy zur Schule und wurde dann Hebamme am National Maternity Hospital in Dublin.
O’Farrell gehörte der Conradh na Gaeilge an und lernte fließend Irisch. Im Jahr 1906 trat sie zusammen mit ihrer lebenslangen Freundin Julia Grenan den Inghinidhe na hÉireann bei. Sie schloss

When Elizabeth O'Farrell was born on 15 August 1898, in Blarney, Cork, County Cork, Ireland, her father, Patrick O'Farrell, was 43 and her mother, Hanora O'Connell, was 41. She married Michael O'Sullivan on 10 February 1920, in Cork, County Cork, Ireland. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. She lived in Blackpool, County Cork, Ireland in 1911. She died on 15 August 1962, in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, at the age of 64, and was buried in Grenagh, County Cork, Ireland.
