When Stephen Schwartz agreed to meet me for an outdoor dinner to discuss the treatment of time in musicals, I thought the Horse & Hound Inn of South Salem, New York, might be a good setting. The former stagecoach stop that predates the American Revolutionary War remains open today as a restaurant. For a moment I imagined myself riding a horse for the rendezvous—it would have taken me about five hours. Stephen lives closer so could have trotted over in minutes, though that September day he drove his Hyundai hybrid and I my Toyota Corolla.

I had easily compressed my journey using a modern vehicle, but for musical bookwriters and lyricists, reducing a story journey is often challenging. Musical makers face many questions about how to set up time, like how much should I dip into the character backstories? How far forward in time should I let the story advance? How can I compress the characters’ experiences into brief song moments?

While sitting at a patio table covered in an oddly out-of-sync vinyl tablecloth, Stephen and I explored some of these questions.

Stephen Michael Schwartz, a composer/recording artist who performs live music throughout the world to a wide range of audiences both young and old, joins a unique group of musicians who have made a living with their music for over forty years.

Stephen's reputation as a superlative singer-songwriter-performer came into focus as one of the three original members of the award-winning children’s musical group, PARACHUTE EXPRESS. The first group ever to be signed to Walt Disney Records Music Box Series, PARACHUTE EXPRESS released six albums and performed on some of the biggest stages while associated with Disney. Their roots came from a long-lasting partnership with San Francisco-based Gymboree Corporation, providing music for their Play & Music Centers throughout the world and where Stephen, to this day, continues to appear with over 100 cities in China under his belt.

He certainly had the look: Tall, dark, and teen-mag-ready handsome. His soft crown of relentless curls was rife for not only coveting by teenage girls, but once photographed, became the beckoning, furry forest through which to run their mood-rung fingers.

At least, that was the hope of RCA Records in 1974, as they were eager to drive the 20-year-old Stephen Michael Schwartz onto the record biz on-ramp, and steer him directly into the pop-idol lane, and ideally, head-long into teenage traffic.

His voice was (and still is) a clear, warm tenor, with the ability to slide into an easy falsetto. His diction and easy-to-understand pronunciation is rarely heard in the many marble-mouthed rock singers heard since mid-century.

But, it’s these particular and rare vocal gifts that make him the perfect presenter of music for children. He even took theater and early childhood education in college!
