Shimon Peres (shee-MOHNPERR-ess, -ez;[1][2][3]Hebrew: שמעון פרס[ʃiˌmonˈpeʁes]ⓘ; born Szymon Perski, Polish:[ˈʂɨmɔnˈpɛrskʲi]; 2 August 1923 – 28 September 2016) was an Israeli politician and statesman who served as the eighth prime minister of Israel from 1984 to 1986 and from 1995 to 1996 and as the ninthpresident of Israel from 2007 to 2014. He was a member of twelve cabinets and represented five political parties in a political career spanning 70 years.[4] Peres was elected to the Knesset in November 1959 and except for three months out of office in early 2006, served as a member of the Knesset continuously until he was elected president in 2007. Serving in the Knesset for 48 years (with the first uninterrupted stretch lasting more than 46 years), Peres is the longest serving member in the Knesset's history. Shimon Peres: We don’t have a choice. It’s either them making our lives miserable and impossible, or us enabling even the people who harbor terror to join in the new age and the great promise.
You started in politics when you were very young. What inspired you to get involved at such a young age?
Shimon Peres: I don’t think I made a major choice to become a politician. When I was a young man in Israel, our major goal ideologically and otherwise was to become farmers, members of a kibbutz. So I joined in a youth movement that sent me to an agricultural school where I got my main education. There, we organized a small nucleus of boys and girls to go and build a kibbutz, and we went to build a kibbutz, but while doing all this, at school and later on at the kibbutz, there was a great debate taking place in Israel on two major issues. Shimon Peres: Godfather of Israeli entrepreneurship
By way of background, Shimon Peres was born in Poland in 1923 and immigrated with his family as a child before Israel was even a state, let alone a startup nation. Like many émigrés, Peres became part of the immigrant story of innovation, creating change in their adopted lands.
Peres learned business and finance even before politics. In Israel’s War of Independence, he was responsible for arms purchases and recruitment, and in 1948 was appointed head of the naval services. In 1949, he headed the Defense Ministry’s procurement delegation to the United States—an early indication that he was destined to participate in the global commerce of ideas and inventions.
Peres later became a Member of the Knesset and served as Deputy Minister of Defense from 1959-1965. But he also learned the art of information and international relations, becoming Minister of Immigrant Absorption in 1969 and Minister of Transport and Communications from 1970-1974.
