AJ Mendez

AJ Mendez is a bestselling author, mental health and animal rights advocate, and former pro-wrestler. She is best known as AJ Lee during her time in WWE and is a three-time Divas Champion. She won a Slammy Award for Diva of the Year in 2012 and 2014 and was voted Woman of the Year by readers of Pro Wrestling Illustrated from 2012 to 2014.

Mendez retired from in-ring competition in 2015, later revealing the discovery of permanent damage to her cervical spine was the catalyst to her retirement. Prior to her time in WWE, Mendez performed for several Northeast-based independent promotions as Miss April, including Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU), where she held the WSU Tag Team Championship once.

After signing with WWE in 2009, AJ was part of the third season of NXT in 2010, placing third in the competition. Even though she did not win NXT she was still given a contract with the WWE and debuted in her first match for the SmackDown brand on May 27, 2011 edition where she teamed with Kaitlyn in a losing effort against Alicia Fox and Tamina.

AJ Lee held the Divas Championship 3 times in the WWE, successfully retaining her title at WrestleMania XXX. the night after on Raw she was defeated and lost her title to NXT Women's Champion, Paige. On the June 30, 2014 episode of Raw, Lee returned to the WWE. She challenged Paige for the Divas Championship and won her second championship.[5]

On April 3, 2015, it was announced that AJ decided to retire from the company.[6]
