Tommy Bolin
was born 1 Aug, 1951 in Sioux City, Iowa & began playing in bands around the city as a youth (including A Patch of Blue) before moving to Boulder, Colorado in his late teens. He played with American Standard before joining Zephyr featuring Tommy (gtr), David Givens (bass), Candy Givens (vocals), John Faris (keyboards/flute) & Robbie Chamberlin (drums) replaced by Bobby Berge. They produced two albums with Tommy, Zephyr & Going Back to Colorado, and began performing larger venues, opening for more established acts such as Led Zeppelin.

In 1972 Tommy formed Energy, a fusion jazz-rock-blues band  which featured Stan Sheldon (bass), Bobby Berge (drums), Tom Stephenson (keyboards) and Jeff Cook (vocals) who shared writing credits with Tommy over throughout his career. While the band never released an album during his lifetime, several recordings have been released posthumously. THE EARLY YEARS

Tommy Bolin joined Denny & The Triumphs in 1965 on the recommendation of Brad Miller after seeing him play with the Miserlous. They changed the name to APatch of Blue after seeing the 1965 movie of the same name. Patch of Blue played a combination of pop, R&B, blues & jazz and, despite their young age, they opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, The Animals and Herman's Hermits.  Tommy doubled up playing alongside his friend, John Bartle in The Chateaux, alternating between guitar & Hammond organ.

Thomas Richard Bolin (August 1, 1951 – December 4, 1976) was an American guitarist and songwriter who played with Zephyr (from 1969 to 1971), the James Gang (from 1973 to 1974), and Deep Purple (from 1975 to 1976), in addition to maintaining a career as a solo artist and session musician.

Early years

Tommy Bolin was born in Sioux City, Iowa; he began playing with a band called the Miserlous before he was asked to join another band called Denny and the Triumphs in 1964 at age 13. The lineup for Denny and the Triumphs was Dave Stokes on lead vocals, Brad Miller on guitar and vocals, Bolin on lead guitar, Steve Bridenbaugh on organ and vocals, Denny Foote on bass, and Brad Larvick on drums. They played a blend of rock and roll, R&B and the pop hits of the moment, and when bassist Denny Foote left the band to be replaced by the drummer's brother George Larvick Jr, they changed their name to A Patch of Blue.
