Lucio graduated with a B.S. from the University of Texas Pan American.

Lucio worked as a teacher in the Brownsville Independent School District before pursuing public office. He served as Cameron County treasurer in 1970 and as Cameron County commissioner from 1979 to 1982. Lucio then served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives. As of June 2020, he was president and chief executive officer of Rio Shelters, Incorporated.^[1]

A leader on education, healthcare and economic development, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations. The Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas recently honored Lucio with their “Legislative Hero Award” for his achievements benefitting the families of fallen police officers.

In 1991, the Rio Grande Valley elected Lucio to the Texas Senate after two successful terms in the Texas House of Representatives.

Prior to serving in the Texas Legislature, Lucio first held office as Cameron County Treasurer at the age of twenty-five, he later served as Cameron County Commissioner.
