Sri Lankan actor, playback singer and politician (1945–1988)
Kovilage Anton Vijaya Kumaranatunga (Sinhala: කොවිලගේ ඇන්ටන් විජය කුමාරණතුංග; Tamil: விஜய குமாரணதுங்க; 9 October 1945 – 16 February 1988), popularly known as Vijaya Kumaratunga, was a Sri Lankan actor, playback singer and politician[1] regarded as one of the most popular icons in Sri Lankan cinema of all time. He was married to former Sri Lankan PresidentChandrika Kumaranatunga from 1978 until his assassination in 1988. He was the founder of Sri Lanka Mahajana Party.[1]
Early life
Kovilage Anton Vijaya Kumaranatunga was born on 9 October 1945, at the government hospital in Ragama to Roman Catholic parents.[2] His father was Kovilage Benjamin Kumaratunga, a village headmen and mother was Clara Beatrice Perera. The youngest of four siblings, Vijaya had two elder brothers: Sydney and Vivian and one elder sister: Rupa.[3] He received his primary education at Seeduwa Davisamara Maha Vidyalaya, secondary education at St. Benedict's College, Kotahena

It’s by now well known that the president does not like the press making any comment on her children, and that’s by and large a wish that has been respected all along during her tenure of office. But Vimukthi Kumaratunga’s public appearance last week at a press conference is a different matter. Her son has, for the first time, appeared in the public spotlight which brings him into the public domain, and the President will not grudge any comments made on her boy’s fifteen minutes of fame...
Apparently, Vimukthi Kumaratunga began the press conference in faltering Sinhalese by apologizing for his lack of mastery in his mother tongue – Sinhala. He said ‘’mata vediya sinhala kathakaranna behe.’’

Before the recently held presidential election, none of the political parties in Sri Lanka had a more sophisticated propaganda mechanism than the United National Party.
The UNP propaganda mechanism was more sophisticated than propaganda machinations of other parties as the UNP was in full control of its message. The ‘message’, more often than not, was created at the top and was passed down to the party’s spokespersons through proper channels and mechanisms.

There was no firing all over the place. Messages were nicely articulated and carefully crafted, and the spokespersons were thoroughly briefed by the top rung leadership.
Although the United National Party held press conferences on a daily basis prior to the election, there were no PR blunders or faux pas. Most of their press conferences put the government on the ‘backfoot’ and its (Government’s) spokespersons often put their feet in the mouth when trying counter allegations made by the UNP.
However, after securing power, things have now taken a different turn.
