Gustave was born on December 12, 1821, in the hospital of Rouen.His father, Achille-Cléophas, was its chief surgeon.Caroline, her mother, née Fleuriot, is from Pont-Audemer.Her brother Achille, the eldest of the siblings, is then eight years old.Three years later, Caroline, his beloved sister, his playmate, was born.Their correspondence testifies to their closeness.Flaubert had great affection for his sister, whom he taught and who practised the arts, drawing and piano.When Gustave was four years old, a nanny, Julie, entered the service of the Flauberts.She remained there for fifty years as a servant.The Flaubert family is housed in the official house of the Hôtel-Dieu, which today houses the Flaubert Museum and History of Medicine.

The son of a doctor, Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen, France, on December 12, 1821. He was in poor health for much of his childhood and was not expected to live to adulthood. Flaubert's younger sister Caroline also was often ill, and she finally died in childbirth at age twenty-one. Despite her early death, she greatly affected Flaubert and was a strong feminine influence on him, while his older brother Achille was nine years his senior and the brothers never developed a friendship. At age three, Flaubert began to be cared for by Julie, a servant hired by his parents, who stayed with the family until her death in 1883 and actually outlived all the Flaubert children.

After performing poorly in home schooling lessons taught by his mother, nine-year-old Flaubert was placed in the College Royal de Rouen, a strict, militaristic school. His mother, Anne Justine Caroline (née Fleuriot) was the daughter of a doctor from Pont l’Évêque. Gustave was the fourth child and second son. He was educated at the Lycee Pierre-Corneille secondary school in the town. He formed a friendship with the philosopher Alfred Le Poittevin who shared his pessimistic outlook on life.
